Mental Flossing

I bought the new Fiona Apple CD a few days ago and I've been listening to it ever since. And I mean all the time. Except when I'm listening to Muzak at work. Even then it will peak its head between songs or when I'm not really listening to the Muzak which is most of the time. The point of this entry is not how obsessed I now am with this album but the fact that I actually bought a CD. It's been over a year since I actually paid for music, hard copies of music that is, and that was a used copy of The Shins "Chutes Too Narrow" which I bought and promptly became obsessed with as well. I am actually still mildly obsessed with that album.

It's amazing the power music has to conjure memories. It's not always a specific moment in time but maybe a chapter or phase of your life that's past. Sometimes you can't even place the time; it's just a memory of a feeling that comes back. A gorgeous spring day with all the windows open and the sun and the breeze and the music all blowing in and around the living room. Smells can do that, too. Your sense of smell is the sense that most effects memory. Every time I burn nag champa incense it sends euphoric waves through my body. Every time. Anyone have that happen? It's one of the most dependable things. Like that person who, no matter how you're feeling when you start talking to them, will leave you smiling every time effortlessly.

ADVICE: Unless you're a die-hard Gwyneth fan, wait for "proof" to be on video.
